Proposal from Anders Møller

Submitted 2005-05-20  -  Revision of the facet R and HACCP branch in facet Z

Discussion closed, proposal accepted

Descriptors in bold and italics are suggested new descriptors.

It is suggested that the facet R and the HACCP branch of facet Z be recoded using the normal coding for the LanguaL thesaurus.

The present codes in facet R and HACCP branch of facet Z are moved to the descriptors' Scope Notes with the following text: "US FDA 1995 Code:  XX", where XX is the present code.

The top level of facet R will be given the FTC R0010, and new descriptors *GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS AND PLACES NOT KNOWN* (FTC: R0001) and *CONTINENTS, REGIONS AND COUNTRIES* (FTC: R0523) introduced.

Furthermore, all geographical designations are moved down one level as narrower terms to *CONTINENTS, REGIONS AND COUNTRIES* [R0523].

The new facet R top levels will be as follows

R. GEOGRAPHICAL PLACES AND REGIONS [R0010]

    CLIMATIC ZONE [R0193]

    ...

    CONTINENTS, REGIONS AND COUNTRIES [R0523]

        AFRICA [R0339]

        ANTARCTICA [R0110]

        ASIA [R0345]

        ATLANTIC OCEAN ISLANDS [R0352]

        AUSTRALIA [R0117]

        CENTRAL AMERICA [R0354]

        EUROPE [R0355]

        INDIAN OCEAN ISLANDS [R0361]

        NORTH AMERICA [R0362]

        PACIFIC OCEAN ISLANDS [R0364]

        SOUTH AMERICA [R0124]

    FISHING AREAS [R0124]

    ...

GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS AND PLACES NOT KNOWN [R0001]

    GEOPOLITICAL DESIGNATION [R0365]

    ....

The top levet of the HACCP branch in facet Z will be given the FTC Z0221.

Reason:

The facet R and the HACCP branch (FTC: HA00) of facet Z do not follow the normal coding of the rest of the LanguaL thesaurus. The normal coding includes a five character alphanumeric code. The first character designates the facet letter and the remaining four characters are unique serial numbers with no specific indication of meaning. In facet R and the HACCP branch of facet Z, the codes do not follow this rule, which makes the use of cardinality rules difficult, especially the implemetation of the indexing rules in the LanguaL Food Product Indexer are rendered impossible.
